Excerpt from an opinion

[1] If the legal line of reasoning opposed by this pleading is not reversed then one would have to initiate a proceeding to, for example, make an interlocutory application to strike out a statement of claim, thus destroying the barrier between layers of abstraction.

An interpleader such as an interlocutory pleading, occurs in chambers, and thus there has not, in fact, been a proceeding before the court at that stage.

[2] The same error in logic pointed out by Russell in his paradox can be found in attempts to use the pumping lemma to prove itself or system .

[3] An acceptable system, such as , of the plaintiff and pointed to by his semantic grammar system, avoids this problem and allows for dependent types – polymorphic dynamic types so that there may be a compile-time verified kernel with a run-time safe module system.

[4] An analogy is an aspect and not all facts and facets are preserved in a transformation, which should carry a cost function. A transformation that carries subsurface features must remain consistent by always accounting for those features and transformations can not contradict the subsurface facts.

[5] There is a difference between an institution and a person. Whereas a person dies, buildings can be replaced. A university can not attend a cocktail party but can be represented by its chancellor or one so deputised.

[6] A chancellor may be unaware of facts regarding an employee and thus may not be personally culpable but yet remain subject to censure or resignation as chancellor; however, should the chancellor commit a crime as chancellor then both the person and the institution are jointly and severably liable.

Representation, such as in a democratic republic like the constitutional monarchy of Scotland, lifts the role of the person to that of representative. There can be no recourse to warful acts. Documents such as the constitution of the United States of America refer to good behaviour. A representative can not be punished for the acts of one of their constituents. That breaks a layer of abstraction.

There are some societies or people who feel they have the right to mete out justice in an eye-for-an-eye manner. One man’s wife is killed, so he feels justified in seeking the death of a distant relative of the person who allegedly killed his wife. That is a breakdown of the social compact and an attempt to gain recourse from the very safety of person and property that the social compact ensures.

Three essays written in a reading paper on complex adaptive systems with Dr. Marcus Frean.

The essay on analysis of genetic regulatory networks proved sufficient background for a biologically ignorant hacker to get a sabbatical the following year.

The essay on ant colonies and distributed systems makes an observation on distributed systems and also highlights an interesting result in the difference between rewarding group or individual behaviour in team challenges.

The essay on self-organised criticality presages my argument against emergence.

An introductory essay pointing out the equivalence between the Lotka-Volterra equations and replciator dynamics for a reading paper on complex adaptive systems with Dr. Marcus Frean.

Dr. Frean and his students have been studying ‘rock-paper-scissor’ dynamics and survival of the unfit.

A series of letters and working papers on cooperation and the prisoner’s dilemma:

A Nature editor, Richard Sutcliffe, said that the review provided a firm and novel conclusion but doubted that the paper could compete with limited space demands.

Specific gene networks lead to particular structures in the brain. Different genotypes have different phenotypic expressions. Certain lineages will have brain structures which are more conducive to the phenomenon which we shall discuss. These brain structures can also be achieved through meditation on different principles and certain physical activities.

Posit a certain structural motif in the brain, say I. The having of this motif is conducive to the bearer of the trait achieving a Böse condensate, and maintain a quantal superposition of thoughts.

The thoughts in this kind of mind can communicate with the body through the free electrons, as described by the molecular valence shell electron pair theory, in compounds involved in the metabolic processes of the body.

Different bodies can communicate through shared genetic motifs. Minds may communicate, having been through the formalities of etiquette.

From the state of anarchy, a civil society develops. Nobility are those who do not effuse karmic noise. Aristocracy are those who can act on behalf of their constituents. Monarchs are those chosen from the upper aristocracy to represent the nobility and deal with exceptional circumstances.

For a body of people to attempt to do away with the constitutional monarchy is a demonstration of a lack of understanding of the nature of nobility.

Here is the book.  I cannot stress how important understanding all the references is.  Especially the early result that a strategy must be able to beat Tit-for-Tat (1,1,0).  An agent that uses (0,0,c/b) cannot compete in an environment with generous Tit-for-Tat (1,1,(b-c)/b).

Lying, cheating, stealing and other dishonourable acts can be described as defection. There are many ways to eliminate defectors: withdrawing from interaction, isolation, and rehabilitation.

Chimpazees can cooperate to fetch bananas. Humans can cooperate to build and man hospitals. The breakdown of society occurs when the employees of the hospital spend all their time looking for stolen items, chasing down insurance fraud, and writing and rewriting policies and procedures.

After a bad experience with short-term naive optimisation by a coworker at Schering-Plough Animal Health in Lower Hutt in which his theft of my work just before completion resulted in a rewrite of standard operating procedures instead of a refresher course for the manufacturing plant, I returned to university with the express purpose of examining cooperation embodied in the prisoner’s dilemma.

Setting aside the complexities of cost functions, in the first instance a single interaction can be cast in terms of costs, , and benefits . When the cost outweighs the benefit, there is no point. Barring the mathematically possible but unrealistic cases, that leaves the prisoner’s dilemma situation, in which there may be mutual benefits to cooperation in a case in which the interaction is repeated for an unknown duration.

My supervisor had extended the basic model to include situations with noisy interactions. The simple model exists in a vacuum and can be extended to various interactions on topological spaces. However, before that point, Marcus suggested I apply the Metropolis algorithm to optimise an adjustable parameter, , and compare agents with different learning rates.

I had presented my work at the end of year seminar, and was appalled to see a couple of computer ‘scientists’ with gleeful looks wondering how they could apply the miser/slave relationship to departmental politics. In a world at war, I was appalled. We give people the priviledge of being able to spend time to extend and improve the body of human knowledge, and here these people were jumping up and down having already missed the point at the top of this post.

I submitted my project, and, given that they seem to marked on the abstract alone, I had already received honours, and the behaviour at that seminar, I felt that my submission was excellent. Unfortunately, those ‘scientists’ disagreed and have attempted to obliterate all traces of that thesis and myself. The figure that appears in the book was developed during the thesis year, but there was no point saying anything. I also had time to read Plato after that, which confirmed my view that the result was not new, merely a result of a fresh line of thought.

One last thought, though the model I used was simple, it suggests an approach in which fluid tactics overlay solid principles, constrained optimisation. Ironic that my copy of the book, along with two outlines for articles on further developments of my work, were stolen from my apartment. Ironic that that there are those who feel justified in reading out loud my keystrokes as I type this post. Ironic that there are those who feel justified in watching commentated assassinations on live feeds. Justified that they shall provide me with a copy from the satellite footage of those two outlines that I wrote last year on Beach Road. Do we need another 9/11? I hope not. I shall not bother to discuss it at breakfast at the soup kitchen tomorrow evening.
